What is ‘Spiritual Sovereignty’?

TL;DR

Spiritual sovereignty is the commitment to yourself to take radical self-responsibility on your spiritual journey and not allow anything external to you make decisions for you. It is a commitment to utilising your free will.

The degree to which we do, and do not, have free will is not the topic today but I will cover it in upcoming blog posts.

IN MORE DETAIL

Sovereignty, as defined by Oxford Languages is ‘supreme power or authority.’ Terms similar to ‘Sovereignty’, according to Oxford Languages, include ‘autonomy’ and ‘independence.’

WHY IS SOVEREIGNTY IMPORTANT ON THE SPIRITUAL JOURNEY?

Sovereignty on the spiritual journey requires a deep understanding that everything you need is within you and committing to truly ‘knowing thyself.’ This does not mean that you cannot learn from teachers or from being in community with other people. Teachers are there to help guide you on your spiritual journey. Being in community with others is essential as we learn so much from being in relationship with others.

It also means being responsible for how you show up in the world (not just on the meditation cushion). Taking the time to observe yourself, reflect upon your actions and words and asking yourself ‘is this the most loving way to approach this?’ in all interactions (including with yourself). Knowing thyself AND loving thyself. It is about showing up authentically.

Working with your own Akashic Records is one of the ways that you can step into spiritual sovereignty. They will help you truly understand yourself, from that bigger picture, more objective soul level understanding.

Throughout your spiritual journey you are going to come into contact with both the ‘evolutionary’ and ‘devolutionary’ streams of consciousness. This is part of the development of our age. Part of spiritual sovereignty is discerning between the two for yourself.

TIPS TO HELP YOU MOVE TOWARDS SPIRITUAL SOVREIGNTY

  1. Commit to and take radical self-responsibility. Acknowledge that you are responsible for your own thoughts, actions, and deeds and only those. You are not responsible for anyone else's thoughts, actions, and deeds, but you are responsible for your own.

Ask yourself, ‘how am I showing up everyday in my relationships?’ ‘How am I showing up for myself every day?’ Be honest and reflective, without slipping into self-judgement.

  2. Look at how much you lie throughout your day and reflect on why you are doing it. When do you say ‘yes’ when you want to say ‘no?’ And why do you say ‘yes’ instead of ‘no?’ Lying is the opposite of being authentic and when we lie, we cause energetic stagnation to build up and distort the information from our Soul.

  3. Pay attention to where you are giving your power away. There is nothing wrong with receiving guidance and perspectives from other people, but ultimately, you have to make your own decisions. Constantly seeking external validation or instructions from others is giving your power away.

  4. Pay attention to when and how you are overriding your intuition. We all have an internal guidance system which tells us when something is in alignment and when it is not. This is how your Soul communicates with you on a daily basis. The problem is, we have often been ignoring it for YEARS. With spiritual sovereignty the key is to firstly dedicate some time to connecting to and hearing your intuition and then most importantly, taking action aligned to it.

  5. Ask yourself, where and how do I compromise my authenticity? For example, when you are showing up on social media to promote your business are you showing up authentically or are you trying to be who you think people want you to be?

  6. Ask yourself, do you know who you really are? A lot of the time we have this idea of who we are, and that idea might be based on who you were five years ago or what people tell you they think you are. But do you really know what your values, wants and needs are? Do you live in alignment to these?

  7. Do you practice and prioritise self-nourishment? Self-nourishment goes beyond self-care (which is also important). Self-nourishment is this active process of doing things that nourish you on every level-mentally, physically and emotionally.

  8. When stuff comes up for you, when you are perhaps uncomfortable, when you are angry, when you are scared, are you dealing with it or are you trying to avoid it? The reason this is important when it comes to this idea of spiritual sovereignty is anything you repress is going to ‘clog the channels’ and make it harder for you to receive that guidance from your Soul.

  9. Practice self-forgiveness. In my work I meet a lot of beautiful. empathic people who have compassion and patience with others but often lack it when it comes to themselves. Loving ALL parts of ‘you’ is extremely important when it comes to spiritual sovereignty.

  10. Be really honest with yourself. Are you actively seeking to understand yourself and use life as your teacher? Or are you bypassing and avoiding where the work is. All spiritual practices can be used for expansion and evolution AND bypassing. Only you know which it is.

  11. Make a commitment to the connection to your Soul and to the development and enhancement of your internal technology. It is completely normal to experience cycles with this. There will be times where you are very committed and devoted to your practice and connecting to your Soul and intuition. There will also be times where you are not and where the connection feels more difficult. This is completely normal.

  12. Empower yourself with knowledge but focus on your practice. Education is important (and essential in the current age) but you need to balance consumption of information with actual practice. Making space for your own inner wisdom and connection to the higher evolutionary stream to come through.

SUMMARY

One of the highest gifts that you can give yourself is spiritual sovereignty and a commitment to embodying more and more of your Soul, your light. A commitment to your own expansion and evolution is essential at this time of distraction and what can feel like chaos.
